RESOURCES
Founded1974 by George E. Wright, Jr
Purpose: To further the development of Lighter-Than-Air (LTA)
flight by providing a forum for discussion of the history and
technology
of LTA and a resource for LTA researchers, designers and builders.
Emphasisis
on engineering and technology.
Membership: open to all with an interest in LTA flight and
the
construction of LTA vehicles. Membership is currently free of charge. See signup button at the bottom of this page.
Publications:
Quarterly magazine Aerostation
merged
with Lighter-Than-Air Institute's quarterly Gasbag (later Airshipworld) as of 1996.
The
last print issue was Volume 26, Number 4, December 2003. Since January
2004 we have published only to the Web. Issues can be dowloaded free of
charge as .pdf files.
Follow this link [under construction] to view a list of issues available for downloading.
We also publish a three-volume set on how to Build Your
Own Balloon.
Those interested in LTA modeling should check
out Don James' Model Hot Air Blimps.
We also proudly publish Robert (Rex) Rechs' unique manual on Building
Small Gas Blimps. A companion volume,
Muscle Power
Blimps, is also available.
Services:
- ABAC Technical Library. Titles in our extensive library of some 2000 items can be browsed, searched and photocopies or electronic copies (in PDF format) ordered through archivale.com .
- All the 400 or so surviving US Navy Bureau of Aeronautics (LTA Section) Design
Memoranda ("Burgess Memos") will soon be available as reprints or downloadable files, also through Archivale. Thanks to a dedicated LTA enthusiast in the USA, they have been transferred from microfilm to .pdf files.
- Technical and business consulting for LTA-related
projects is
also
available, either directly or by referral.
- For your convenience, we have collected our own document and book
offerings,
and LTA material available from other sources on the Web, into a single
Books
& Documents page, which will gradually become an index and
ordering
guide for all Web-accessible material related to our common interest in
Lighter Than Air flight.
Future Services:
- ABAC intends to resume its earlier practice of holding LTA
Symposia in
low-cost venues. As before, non-ABACers will be welcome, but ABAC
members
will receive discounts.
- An on-line membership directory listing only those
members who
consent
in writing to the publication of their names and addresses.
